Michelle Lawson


Michelle is a Financial Controller of Glencore Coal Assets Australia. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of multiple companies within the Glencore group. Additionally, she fulfils the role of Chairman of the Board at several joint ventures.

Michelle has extensive experience in finance and management, gained from senior positions held in global mining companies and ‘big four’ accounting firms over the past 27 years. She has worked in a variety of areas including commercial services, audit, taxation and credit risk management.

Michelle is an advocate for the mining industry’s development and improvement. She is co-chair of AusIMM WIMnet NSW, deputy chair of AusIMM WIMnet and was conference chair for the inaugural AusIMM Achieve and Inspire 2018 conference. She volunteers in WIMnet NSW’s mentoring program each year and mentors for Glencore graduates and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Program. Michelle is a passionate supporter of the Mark Hughes Foundation, following the passing of her father in 2014 as a result of brain cancer; she was acknowledged as the highest individual fundraiser for the years 2015 and 2016.

In 2015, Michelle was announced NSW Women in Mining  Gender Diversity Champion, was a finalist in the Women in Resources National Awards and was also acknowledged as one of the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining 2016. In early 2018, she carried the Queen’s Baton at the XXI Commonwealth Games in recognition of her contributions to community.

Michelle is an admired role model as a result of her professional success, volunteer activity and enthusiasm for training and mentoring individuals. She has managed to find a balance that allows her to follow her desire for business and at the same time give her family the support and attentiveness they need to grow. It is by achieving that balance and striving for distinction in all aspects of her life that makes Michelle an inspiring person.
