Geoffrey Sharrock

Geoff joined the AusIMM in 1968 while he was a geology student at the University of New South Wales. He was a member of the AusIMM Sydney Branch for many years and later a member of the Southern Queensland Branch.

Most of Geoff’s career was spent in the coal industry, initially working as a coal geologist, later as CEO of several companies including Bayswater Colliery, Wambo Mining, Mt Thorley Coal Loader Ltd and Boggabri Coal.

Geoff was Chair of the AusIMM Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Taskforce (now the AusIMM Health and Safety Society) for five years, during which the Safety Beliefs and Principles were developed and the Institute OHS Award initiated.

Geoff was Chair of the Hunter Region Branch for 11 years, during which the number of Branch members grew from 221 to almost 600, creating the largest regional Branch, and the University of Newcastle Student Chapter was initiated.

During his career Geoff was chair of a number of NSW and Australian Coal Association committees and was one of the founders of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). He was the inaugural chair of the Research Committee.

Geoff was elected to the AusIMM Board in 2011 and elected as President in 2013-14. His dedication to the needs of members (championing the Member Assistance Program) and personally engaging with every Branch was appreciated during his tenure.  His work as Inaugural Chair of the Board Governance Committee led to the Charter and By-Laws Review.  Geoff was instrumental in AusIMM’s reach into Asia and helped establish MoUs with other international kindred bodies.

During Geoff’s tenure as President he visted and helped reactivate many non-active AusIMM Branches.  Branch activity recommenced at Roxby Downs, Kalgoorlie, Eyre Peninsula, Central Queensland, Ok Tedi, Jakarta and Hong Kong.

In 2017, Geoff was asked to take the role as Interim Chair of the Health and Safety Society Committee – a role he continues today.

In 2018 Geoff was appointed as a Commissioner on the Independent Planning Commission of NSW.

Geoff was made an Honorary Fellow of the AusIMM in 2017.
