Steve is a geologist with over 35 years’ experience across exploration, resource development and mine geology, with 18 of those years in mine based operating and brownfields roles.
His early career was spent exploring for a range of commodities (coal, tin, tantalum, gold), before moving into mine geology at a series of gold mines from the mid 1980s at Reedys and Mount Magnet for Metana Minerals in the Murchison, and for Placer Pacific at Granny Smith in the north-east Goldfields of WA from mine commissioning through to 1994.
He joined Rio Tinto in 1994 at Kelian (Indonesia), in a combined mine geology and resource development role, before moving to Lihir (PNG) in 1997 as Chief Geologist and later Mine Technical Manager.
Since 2004, Steve has worked with Rio Tinto’s technical division supporting resource evaluation, mine geology and orebody knowledge across multiple commodities. His role includes oversight of Resource and Reserve reporting and governance across Rio Tinto’s global operations and projects.
Steve has been a member of the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) since 2005, and has been chair since December 2013.
