Roger has been an active member of the AusIMM for nearly 50 years. His service includes two terms as an AusIMM Director (2005-2007 and 2008-2010), Chair of the New Zealand Branch (2001- 2003) and member of the NZ Branch committee for most of this time. Roger has organised some ten NZ Branch annual conferences; three of these were held in conjunction with the Ministry of Development as NZ Minerals Conferences in 1997, 2000 and 2005. Roger’s objective has been to raise funds for student education, securing support and sponsorship from the minerals industry for NZ Branch conferences; funds from which have in turn gone to NZ Education Endowment Trust.
Roger obtained a double BSc in chemistry and geology and an MSc (Hons) in geology from the University of Canterbury. His earlier work following his return to New Zealand in 1969 was for Layton and Associates as leader of its New Zealand operation and for JBL Exploration as its Exploration Manager. At this time, he was joint leader of Earth Scientists Ltd and formed his own consulting company, Roger Gregg and Associates Ltd. While relishing earlier work in the field in central and western Canada, Roger has also lectured in geology and geochemistry at RMIT, Melbourne and treasures his earlier field work in South Australia. His work in New Zealand traversed the entire country over a long period of time, primarily in the South Island. He has made presentations throughout Canada and Australia.
Roger was awarded the Beryl Jacka Award in 2011 and the NZ Branch Lloyd Jones Award in 2015, and still serves on the NZ Branch committee of the AusIMM. He remains on the AusIMM Awards Committee and for several years has been the Auckland organiser for the NZ Branch of the AusIMM.
