Rex Berthelsen is a geologist with more than 25 years’ AusIMM membership and industry experience in Australia and internationally. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (University of Southern Queensland) and a Postgraduate Diploma of Science (James Cook University) and is working towards completing a Master of Geostatistics from the University of Adelaide.
Rex has held technical and leadership roles within the gold and base metal exploration and mining sectors with companies including Normandy, Nord Pacific, Pasminco, Rio Tinto, Goldcorp and New Gold. He is currently the Group Manager – Resource Geology with MMG Ltd. He previously worked on mining and exploration projects in Brazil, Mexico, USA, and Canada, in addition to 15 years working on projects in Queensland, Northern Territory and New South Wales. At MMG, Rex leads the Mineral Resource estimation and reporting teams of the company’s assets and has responsibility for geology governance across the organisation.
Rex has served on AusIMM committees and branches such as the Cobar Branch as chair and treasurer, the Lachlan Branch, the AusIMM Council for Diversity and Inclusion, and the Emerging and Strategic Issues, the Women in Mining (WIMnet), the Branch Resurrection, Policy and Advocacy, Awards, Audit and Risk, Education Endowment Fund and Investment committees. His voluntary service also included contributions to the NSW Geological Survey Ministerial Advisory Committee over a five-year period from 2006.
Rex was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in 2018 after being a Fellow of the AusIMM for around ten years. He holds Chartered Professional (CP) accreditation in the discipline of Geology and has been member of the Board of Directors of the AusIMM since 2011. In 2014 Rex was elected as AusIMM President for 2015 and re-elected for 2016.
