Jae graduated the University of Wollongong with a degree in mining engineering in 2011. During his final year, he was awarded the AusIMM Education Endowment Fund Sir Frank Espie/Rio Tinto Leadership Award, which provided many networking opportunities and helped secure his first job as a graduate with Rio Tinto at their Argyle Diamonds operation. This was a fantastic 18 months where he learned a tremendous amount, spending most of his time with the underground crew to meet the practical requirements for a Western Australian first class ticket. Unfortunately, the downturn resulted in him being made redundant.
Jae’s next role came through the network of industry contacts he had developed over the years. He spent three years in Mt Isa developing his technical skills across all facets of underground mining including development design, drill and blast, scheduling, project management and mine planning.
Jae currently works at Yancoal’s Mount Thorley Warkworth operation in the medium-term planning department. He is responsible for all aspects of the planning cycle from pre-mining infrastructure preparation through shovel, dragline and dump designs, and finally rehabilitation designs and schedules.
The AusIMM opened his eyes to another side of the mining industry – the finance sector which funds mining projects. He has pursued this side of the industry further over the past 12 months by studying a Master of Finance to further understand the levers which can influence the success of an operation.
